Members of the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township gathered at the Gandy Farmstead in Greenfield recently, including President Carol Ann Williams, of Petersburg, Edith Himmelberger, of Petersburg, Anne Snyder, of Beesleys Point, Ebbie Unsworth, of Beesleys Point, Sonia Forry, of Tuckahoe, Stoddard Bixby, of Tuckahoe, and Doug Longenecker, of Tuckahoe.

Behind the Scenes: The Canvas as Lens

I love art and photography, so I get excited when I find articles about people who excel at both. This post is from December but I think it's a great little piece and I also believe that what Librado Romero says in the article is very true.....that having interests in other forms of art (such as painting, sketching, etc.) really does refine the eye when shooting photographs. It makes you think about your "canvas" even more by experimenting with angles, and in turn produces a variety of amazing and unique images that may not have been shot otherwise. Of course it all depends on the photographer, but it's an interesting thought.

Mummies in the Desert.. with Boats

Here is an interesting article by Nicholas Wade of the New York Times about a cemetery of mummies found in what is now China's northwest province of Xinjiang. The graveyard is located near a dried-up riverbed in the Tarim Basin. With layers of symbolism in many parts of their burial rituals, these mummies add some interesting information to history. They also have European features, but DNA markers of East and South Asian origin.

On March 27, an exhibition of these Tarim Basin mummies will open at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California. Wade notes that this is the first time the mummies will be seen outside of Asia. For more information, visit the Bowers Museum website:

Personal Jetpacks will be available soon!

It's like watching the Jetsons, but it's reality. Personal jetpacks are looking to be available some time this fall. How cool would it be to take ariel photos by flying with your own jetpack?? (although from the photos and videos, they may have to be refined a bit more to be able to shoot and fly at the same time...but anything's possible). Glenn Martin, a biochemist from New Zealand, "perfected the current design by building jetpack prototypes in his garage." The jetpacks will start being sold between $90-100,000.00 by Martin Aircraft Company. Read more here in another article from io9 about the pack as well:

"Life" Series

Sunday, March 21 will be one exciting day. Not because it will be a week before I start my scuba lessons, or because it's the beginning of the first week I'm truly diving into my new business, but because it's the premier of the Discovery Channel's "Life" Series. And it's going to be absolutely amazing.

A follow-up to "Planet Earth", "Life" is an 11-part series, narrated by the great Oprah Winfrey, that focuses on different animal behaviors across all seven continents. The HD filming techniques used in both of these series makes viewing an unbelievable experience. The footage is truly incredible, and nothing you could ever see on a regular nature show.

Winter may be the best time to visit Tuscany, when the color palette shifts to bright green, cafes are filled with locals instead of tourists and the cuisine is at its freshest. At left, a view of the Val d'Orcia, known for the cypress trees that line its winding roads, in January.

Il Leccio, a trattoria, is best known for its wine cellar (4,000 bottles deep) and as the unofficial cantina of Tuscany's legendary wine producers. On any given winter day, you might sit next to the person who made the vintage on your table.

La Bandita, an eight-room boutique hotel, sits atop one of the cypress-lined roads that Tuscany is famous for.

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona is a family-run vineyard that produces Tuscan mainstays: rosso, brunello and a supertuscan.

Met Guards Are Artists Too

Many unknown artists work as guards at the Met, hoping for their big break into the art world. Many feel it is hard to be guarding the art they wish to be producing, but most find it the be inspiring, or "like a meditation," to be surrounded by the work. Although the Met encourages the study of art, the last employee art show was in 2007. To help promote themselves, the guards created a new art journal called SW!PE Magazine, and held a Launch Party and Gallery Opening at 25CPW, featuring art from 35 guards. The exhibit opened Thursday night and will run through Sunday. Here is a link to the magazine:  http://swipemagazine.com/.

Michael Varley, a Metropolitan Museum of Art guard, created "Over the Rainbow," which is part of a show of guards' work.
